Trial reels on Instagram: up to 20 tries a day without annoying your followers

Trial reels are the most underrated feature on Instagram. They are only shown to people who do not follow you. Your followers do not see them. That means: you can test, repeat and repost without cluttering your feed.

Requirements

The feature unlocks at around 200 followers. You find it when creating a reel as the toggle "Share as trial". If a trial runs well, you can publish it afterwards as a normal reel.

The limits

Instagram allows 240 trial reels a month, at most 20 a day. That is the technical limit. The safe limit is well below: at six to eight trials a day we have never seen a restriction. Whoever regularly posts 20 risks having overall reach throttled.

What trials are really good for

Not for testing new content. The normal feed is better for that, because the followers stabilise the numbers. Trials are for reposting winners.

A reel that went viral has hit an audience. But that audience is not used up. The same reel, slightly changed, reaches new people as a trial who have never seen it. With us a winner gets reposted up to twenty times as a trial: different text, different cut at the start, different music, different length.

What "slightly changed" means

  • Cut the first three seconds differently. That is the part the algorithm weighs most.
  • Change the caption and the text in the picture.
  • Swap the music.
  • Mirror or zoom slightly.
  • Change the length by one or two seconds.

Each of these changes is enough so that Instagram does not treat the reel as a duplicate. Several together are safer.

The rhythm that works

In the morning one or two new reels in the feed. Spread over the day four to six trials, all variants of winners from the last weeks. In the evening, last, the strongest winner of the month, that is the post with the best chance of running overnight.

At Northfeed trials run automatically: the fleet posts the variants, the dashboard shows which one catches, and the best get published as normal reels.
